Defoliation frequency affects morphophysiological traits in the bunchgrass Poa ligularis Phyton
Gittins,C; Busso,CA; Becker,G; Ghermandi,L; Siffredi,G.
Poa ligularis is an important forage in Patagonian rangelands. Populations of this perennial bunchgrass have been severely affected by overgrazing. We propose that increased defoliation frequencies will decrease (1) aerial- and belowground dry matter production, (2) root survival, and (3) concentration and content of total non-structural crown + root carbohydrates, and (4) increase root mortality. Five defoliation frequencies (plus 1 control) were applied in a representative grassland of the Occidental District in Patagonia during two consecutive growing seasons. All four hypotheses were rejected. Aerial and belowground dry matter production increased from one to two or three defoliations. Root production and dynamics were not affected by the study...

Genetic variation and correlation of agronomic traits in meadow bromegrass (Bromus riparius Rehm) clones Ciência Rural
Araújo,Marcelo Renato Alves de; Coulman,Bruce.
Meadow bromegrass (Bromus riparius Rehm.) is a recently introduced pasture grass in western Canada. Its leafy production and rapid regrowth have made it a major grass species for pasturing beef animals in this region. As relatively little breeding work has been done on this species, there is little information on its breeding behaviour. The main objective of this study was to estimate total genetic variability, broad-sense heritability, phenotypic and genetic correlations. Forty-four meadow bromegrass clones were evaluated for agronomic characters. Genetic variation for dry matter yield, seed yield, fertility index, harvest index, plant height, plant spread, crude protein, neutral detergent fiber and acid detergent fiber, was significant. Broad-sense...

Organic Matter Fractions and Quality of the Surface Layer of a Constructed and Vegetated Soil After Coal Mining. I - Humic Substances and Chemical Characterization Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Leal,Otávio dos Anjos; Castilhos,Rosa Maria Vargas; Pauletto,Eloy Antonio; Pinto,Luiz Fernando Spinelli; Fernandes,Flávia Fontana; Penning,Letiane Helwig; Rosa,Carla Machado da.
After open coal mining, soils are “constructed”, which usually contain low levels and quality of organic matter (OM). Therefore, the use of plant species for revegetation and reclamation of degraded areas is essential. This study evaluated the distribution of carbon (C) in the chemical fractions as well as the chemical characteristics and humification degree of OM in a soil constructed after coal mining under cultivation of perennial grasses. The experiment was established in 2003 with the following treatments: Hemarthria altissima (T1), Paspalum notatum (T2), Cynodon dactilon (T3), Urochloa brizantha (T4), bare constructed soil (T5), and natural soil (T6). In 2009, soil samples were collected from the 0.00-0.03 m layer and the total organic carbon stock...

Perennial grass species richness and diversity on Argentine rangelands recovering from disturbance: (with 3 figures & 5 tables) Phyton
Busso,CA; Giorgetti,HD; Montenegro,OA; Rodríguez,GD.
The influence of types of disturbance (hereon referred to as treatments) on natural vegetation was determined on richness and diversity of perennial grasses in semiarid rangelands of Argentina (40° 39'S, 62° 54'W). Studies were performed in adjacent areas which received different treatments: (1) untreated control; (2) burning; (3) herbicide application (shrub control); (4) Old Field 1 or (5) Old Field 2 (areas previously subjected to mechanical soil disturbance for 25 years; Old Field 1 had been exposed to a more severe grazing than Old Field 2 previous to cropping); and (6) overgrazing. During 1984-1992, annual aboveground biomass was determined per perennial grass species within each treatment after clipping permanent plots (n=30). Grass species richness...

Simulation of Evapotranspiration and Drainage from Potash Tailings Covers using Hydrus-1D CIGR Journal
Bilibio, Carolina; Hensel, Oliver; Uteau, Daniel; Peth, Stephan.
Evapotranspiration is the sum of evaporation of water from soils and transpiration from plants. It is a crucial part of the water cycle and can be measured using lysimeters. However, lysimeters require high maintenance and operation costs; as such, evapotranspiration models are used for making predictions. Thus, the aim of the present study was to calibrate the Hydrus-1D to predict the water balance components of an evapotranspiration cover (in this case, a thin covering layer) for potash tailings piles. Further simulations were performed using different fine fraction proportions, soil textures and crop parameters. A high association between the calibrated and observed drainage of substrates was found, with a variation of 2.9% (approximately 13.6 mm)....
